Top Condition Set by 7th Goto Master

Goto Kenjo was the 7th mainline Goto master, and considered the last of the Momoyama period Masters. His workmanship is considered among the best out of all the mainline masters.
He was also the creator of the style known as “Kaga Goto” when he retired from the mainline family and went to work directly for the Maeda daimyo in Kaga province. His carefully carved pieces are greatly sought after, and since he is from a earlier period, mint condition items by him are rare. This particular set is in excellent condition and is of the best quality. The set is done in very high relief, and the dragons are done in solid gold as well.

Most likely this set was “kept” by a Lord or someone similar for safekeeping, thus the reason for its incredible intact condition.  The subject of dragons is one of the most sought after in design, and is considered a mainline classic. The dragons are well carved showing the skill of that made Kenjo a renowned master. Even the nanako is done to perfection and is a work of art.

Length – kozuka 9.73” width 1.44” length menuki 4.92” width 1.28 cm

Excellent Set of Kaki (Persimmon) Kozuka and Menuki.

Done in the style of the Goto School, the quality is very high as one can see from the pics. The use of red copper to achieve the true natural color of the Kaki when ripe is very nice. The artist's use of gold with the shakudo and copper highlights the main design well. Kaki was a popular theme and were often given as a seasonal gift of goodwill. The saying Kaki Atsumeru means to get or gather up, the reference is to gather fortune or monetary items in a positive manner. All in all a very nice enjoyable set for a serious collector.

Size:

Fuchi – 4.25 cm x 12.4 mm Kashira – 3.7 cm x 1.9 cm
Kozuka – 9.7 cm x 1.4 cm

Nice set of Fuchi Kashira and Kozuka. The design of Tombo or dragonflies is a very popular theme among Bushi. Dragonflies go forward and are very strong, traits that Bushi respect. This set is nice together or can be bought individually. The Fuchi Kashira are made of iron with shakudo dragonflies done in deep dark shakudo with gold accents. They are very nice, and would look great on a very nice blade. Note that the shitodome in the Kashira are made of solid gold, showing the level of this set. The Kozuka is made of shibuichi,  with a gold and shakudo dragonfly (slight damage on one wing but it shows that the gold is done in tutor, a top level technique). Both pieces are very nice for mounting.

Nice set of Fuchi Kashira, Kogai, Kozuka and Menuki. The design of Sambaso dancers was a very popular theme. Sambaso dancers from around the 9th C have were known to do a religious dance to appease the Gods and stop natural disasters such as earthquakes. Since superstitions ran high in the olden days, the tradition of Sambaso dancers performing their rituals was regarded as very important.

The use of fine carving and high quality metals make this an excellent set. Top grade shakudo, along with high use of high grade gold imparts the richness that it deserves. The kogai and kozuka are signed by Omori Teruhide, and deserves some checking. The set of Kogai and Kozuka and Menuki are definitely Omori School workmanship, more reason to check the mei carefully. The Fuchi Kashira are signed by Shigemitsu and are of very high quality. There is an Omori maker by this name and it is very possible that it is this maker. All in all a very nice set of fittings that would look fantastic mounted. Additionally, the nanako is of very high quality and is no easy task to accomplish. Such workmanship in the set had to be done by someone of a very high skill and was the usual standard of the Omori School. Set comes in an custom old fitted box.
